Book Reviews For Kids

Grades 1-2

These elementary book lists will jump start your child's love of reading. Use Annette's book reviews for kids to find some great books for Grades 1-2.

The stories in this group are a little longer and have a much larger vocabulary than the preschool book list, but they all still have fun pictures. We know that your children (and you!) will enjoy the variety of these home school books.

Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse, Leo Lionni

Buford the Little Bighorn, Bill Peet

Buford grows a huge set of horns and tries to escape from hunters wanting his horns. Find out how he uses them to get away. The pictures are fun to look at.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Judi Barrett

I decided this one needs a caption of its own because of how much we enjoyed it. It’s about a little town that gets all of its food from the sky. Does it sound crazy? Your kids will love it!

David's First Bicycle, Rosalie Silver

Everyone (even us girls!) enjoyed reading this book. There is a lesson learned in having the responsibility of having your very own bicycle.

The Forbidden Forest, William Pene du Bois

Last One Home is a Green Pig, Edith Thacher Hurd

This "I Can Read Book" takes you on a wild ride with two friends, Monkey and Duck, as they race home. We won't give away who wins.

The Little House, Virginia Burton

This little house on a hill in the country is eventually surrounded by the big city. Find out how it gets back to the country where it belongs.

Make Way for Ducklings, Robert McCloskey

Mr. and Mrs. Mallard are looking for just the right place in Boston to hatch their ducklings so that they will be safe. After some searching, they may have found just what they are looking for...

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Virginia Burton

This steam shovel dug lots of holes for lots of things, but eventually couldn't dig anymore. You almost feel sorry for him, but it all works out in the end.

A New Coat for Anna, Harriet Ziefert

Ollie Solves a Messy Mystery, Elizabeth B. Rodger

The Story of Ferdinand, Munro Leaf

Ever since he was little, Ferdinand the bull was not like his friends. He is not a fierce fighting bull. He prefers to just sit quietly under his favorite tree. So what will happen when he is picked to go to the bull fights in Madrid?

The Sword in the Tree, Clyde Robert Bulla

The Velveteen Rabbit, Margery Williams
