Teaching Textbooks

My daughter hated doing math, and it became a daily battle in our house before finding Teaching Textbooks.

She was/is good at math, but she just hated to do it. Unfortunately, I chose a curriculum based on great reviews and testing statistics, and didn't consider her learning style. After 4 years of battling and trying to adjust the curriculum to make it more 'daughter friendly', I decided that it was time to try something else.

We settled on Teaching Textbooks because it was computer based (for her grade) and more interesting to her. The product was fairly new, so I was leery, but it turned out to be such a blessing! She still hates math, but she does it without complaining, and her independent testing scores are very high.

She's moved on from working on the PC to working out of a textbook (7th grade and up are no longer done on the computer), but she's still doing great.

The only adjustment that I made, was to move her up a grade level. We felt that her grade level in TT was too easy for her.

Well below grade level
by: Anonymous

We have used Teaching Textbooks for several years. I love the way it is laid out. I thought it was a lifesaver for my youngest as it brought her up to grade level. But then I realized after she did standardized testing that she is WELL below grade level. After looking into it, I realized that the 6th grade TT was more like a 4th grade level. I'm very discouraged by this.

This would explain why my advanced 8th grader thought the curriculum was so incredibly easy, too. And I thought it was just because she was so smart.

I will continue to use it for my youngest as she does have such a difficulty in math, but I will now recognize that it (& she) is well below grade level. I'm currently looking for something new for my 8th grader so that she will be adequately challenged and prepared for college.
