How Would I Start?

by Kelvin
(New York City)

I live in Queens, NYC, 16 years old in High School and wonder...how would I start? I don't feel free to learn anything in my school.

How would I start?
Am I too late?
Can my mom home school me?

Also, I honestly LOVE to learn stuff that interests me. Anything I see or hear I always feel the need to research about it. I have nothing to talk about with my friends because they don't learn ANYTHING other than what the school teaches them. At home I talk with a lot of friends online who have the same interest such as 3D Modeling.

Any answer would be awesome! I'm desperate to find an alternative.

Hi Kelvin,

Congratulations on considering homeschooling! Your eagerness to learn is wonderful! In answer to your questions...start here: How to Start Homeschooling Have you discussed this with your mom? You will BOTH want to be on the same page. And no, you're not too late. :)

Get friendly with your local librarian. Homeschoolers love the library. She will know of other families in your area that are already happily homeschooling. While there, check out the book The Teenage Liberation Handbook. It is full of helpful information. Don't worry that you might be falling behind. Take a few days to read it with your mom. You'll be glad you did. Promise.

Start there. Take it one day at a time. Be sure you're following the laws of New York. Visit the HSLDA Site to learn more.

I know that first step is scary. But others have done it with much success. You will, too, one step at a time.

Blessings in your new venture!
