What is the advantage of homeschooling?

Okay, maybe Richard Dawson never asked this question. But I asked a group of parents what they felt the benefits to homeschooling were and this is what they told me...

1. Homeschooling allows for a lot of flexibility:

You decide what time you start and end your day.
    You choose your own curriculum.
You determine how and where you want to do school, either at your desk or in the tree house.
You plan your trips ANY time of the year. (This was a huge advantage of homeschooling for us because it allowed us to take vacations during the off-season.)
You decide when to sneak a quick snack or take a potty break. ;)
You can even take your pet to class!

Dennis Swanberg came to Wisconsin! We were so excited because we had been watching his show on Saturday evenings. It was one of those memorable homeschooling field trips we did as a family.

2. Kids learn proper social skills from adults who have them! Not their peers. Socialization is a very hot topic when comparing homeschooling vs public schools and one that we can be proud to answer. Because of that, homeschool children are able to interact with anyone of any age without being uneasy or uncomfortable.

3. Because you know your child better than anyone else, you will be able to teach to their specific needs, at their own pace, and to their strengths rather than punish their weakness(es). That was a mouthful, so, go back and read it again, I’ll wait. ;)

4. Even an illness or medical condition does not hinder you from teaching your child at home in a loving environment, giving hugs and encouragement they so often need. It will certainly make life much easier and more full. And we can ALL certainly benefit from a less rushed lifestyle!

5. As a parent you can encourage your child’s creativity in a loving homeschool setting. No peer pressure here!

6. The freedom to teach our children what we believe. This is one of my favorite reasons for homeschooling leaving little to no room for government intervention.

7. The homeschool environment teaches them real life skills so necessary for when they’re on their own. This would include activities from paying bills and balancing the checkbook to meal preparation and watching the plumber!

8. You learn right along with your children. That is so true. It’s amazing how much better you become at the times tables when you’ve done literally thousands of flash cards!

9. To be able to eat breakfasts and lunches together that are homemade. I have so cherished this time together. We have many a fond memory around the kitchen table that just would not have been possible had they not been home. Let's not forget how nutritious meals at home can be. Nothing beats fresh fruits and veggies! And if your children have any allergies, you won't have to worry about them eating the wrong food. 10. Because God called you to teach! When you do something out of love, the whole atmosphere is so positive that it just seems to flow. Well, most of the time! ;)

No one will ever be able to take away from us the time we have been able to spend together as a family. Where else can a child be outside doing school while Mom is hanging out the laundry?
